American Crane & Equipment Corporation is a recognized leader in the design and manufacture of electric overhead traveling cranes and wire rope hoists. Located in Southeastern Pennsylvania, American Crane products are in operation around the world, including a former Russian weapons facility, where they are used in ballistic missile disassembly. Because of the specialized nature of each crane and wire rope hoist designed and manufactured at American Crane, the company requires software that can be adjusted for each order received. Karen Norheim, Director of IT and Marketing at American Crane, recalls when the company used a DOS based integrated legacy system for accounting and job costing. "There was no manipulative data, she said. " We had to use EXCEL and key in intensive information regarding each job, and the costing reports were never completely accurate."
 American Crane’s search for the right ETO software for its business led them to Jobscope, a manufacturing management software application for engineer-to-order manufacturers. Founded in 1981, Jobscope's applications provide modules such as Accounting, Job Costing, Engineering, Production, Scheduling, Materials Planning and Purchasing to track all details on individual projects or jobs. "The information we get from Jobscope is pretty fantastic!" said Karen Norheim. "Jobscope is made to accept custom design scenarios. We can pull more accurate job costing data and our new reports are over 25% more accurate than before. We can also estimate more precisely because we can pull past jobs and sort and filter through the information," she said. Jobscope has also given American Crane better invoice tracking, the ability to charge labor for each individual piece manufactured and has reduced shut-down of the plant for inventory count from one week to two days.
The Jobscope product has worked so well for American Crane that the company is now phasing its Engineering Department into the software. American Crane is also currently going through a large expansion, and the company credits Jobscope for helping to make the transition easier. "With the access we have to our information, Jobscope allows us to make better business decisions. One reason we are growing is because of the detailed data we now have. We know what areas we can effectively grow," said Norheim.
